Historic, wild deer park steeped in history and listed in the Domesday Book
A rare chance to run in such an historic & secluded venue
What is Eridge Park?
Eridge Park is the family home of the Marquess of Abergavenny. The Estate is steeped in history, being reputedly the oldest enclosed Deer Park in England. It is listed in the Domesday Book under the name of Reredfelle and the ownership of Odo, the brother of William the Conqueror. The 2nd Earl of Abergavenny, In 1787 Henry Nevill, the 2nd Earl of Abergavenny began building Eridge Castle.
The landscape was later enhanced by opening up vistas, walks and carriage drives, the construction of follies (most notable Saxonbury Tower and the castellated wall at Sham Farm) and the rebuilding of old workers’ cottages in ornate Estate style.
A world away from everyday life
The running
The Eridge Park estate is nearly eight miles in perimeter and while several public footpaths go into the estate, the wider park area that we are using is not open to the public.
Our half marathon and 10k routes will pass through the medieval woodland planted by the family over 400-600yrs ago and some beautiful lakes. You will be the only people on the estate - which makes the running all the more special.
Herds of majestic deer live at Eridge Park, so sorry, no dogs will be allowed this time.
The terrain is varied and challenging in places, which makes for an incredible trail running experience. There are some very steep hills on the route so this is definitely not a day to worry about finishing times.
Spectators
You will be able to invite your friends and family to the event, to enjoy Eridge Park and cheer you on to the finish line.
Due to the private nature of the estate, they will need to purchase spectator passes (under 11's go free). They will be able to enjoy walking in the park but please note it is extremely large and they should not stray from the running routes and our signage.
We're sorry but no dogs are allowed in the venue / at the event due to the deer that live on the estate.
The routes
The route takes in the epic Whitehill Woods, passing the memorial stone - you need to read the inscription to appreciate; lakes, bluebells, and saving the best till last, the view of the estate from the viewpoint near the family home.
The terrain will continuously change from sweeping descents to steep hands-on-knees style climbing. But all of it is an incredible trail experience.
You will definitely deserve an afternoon with your feet up afterwards.
Amenities on site
There will be a food and drink offering in the event village.
Expect hot drinks, pastries and snacks before or after your event. This is a very remote venue though, so don't expect lots of choice or a range of facilities!
There will be portaloos on site but we won't be offering a big, busy event village - this is all about the escape and tranquility. You are welcome to bring a picnic - we will be closing the venue around 2pm! (Please take your rubbish away with you and respect the land.)
